Each file is set up at full size with three guides: an orange dashed bleed line, a black finished-size line, and a blue dashed safe area. Build to those and your artwork prints without surprises.

The three lines

Orange dashed — bleed

Extend backgrounds and any color that runs to the edge all the way out to this line. It gets trimmed off. Its whole job is to absorb the small variation in where the blade lands.

Black — finished size

What you actually get back. The sign is cut here.

Blue dashed — safe area

Keep text and logos inside it. Anything nearer the edge risks the trim, and on riders and framed panels the outer edge can sit under hardware where nobody will ever read it.

The two mistakes we see most

No bleed. Artwork built exactly to 24 × 18 with a colored background leaves a white hairline down one edge after trimming.

A logo pulled off a website. 72 dpi looks fine on screen and soft at two feet wide. Ask whoever made your logo for the vector file — it is usually an AI, EPS or SVG, and it scales to any size.

If you would rather not

Send your logo and the wording and we will lay it out. Dropping content into a standard layout is free. Original design work is $75 an hour and quoted before we start.

Questions we get

What is bleed and why does it matter?

Bleed is the extra 1/8 inch of background that extends past the finished edge. Signs are trimmed after printing and the cut is never perfect to the thousandth, so without bleed you get a thin white sliver along one edge. Extend backgrounds to the orange line and you never see it.

What is the safe area?

The blue dashed line. Keep text and logos inside it. Anything closer to the edge risks being trimmed off, and on a rider or a framed panel the outer edge may sit under hardware.

What resolution should artwork be?

150 dpi at full size is plenty for signs read from a distance. Vector artwork is better still and has no resolution to worry about. A logo pulled off a website at 72 dpi will look soft at 24 inches wide.

Do I have to use these?

No. Any print-ready PDF at the right size works. The templates just save the back-and-forth when something arrives at the wrong dimensions.
